Estimating
Carat Weight
If you
buy a diamond ring in a reputable jewelry store, you normally
don't need to know how to estimate the carat weight of the
diamonds because the weight will be marked on the ring. However,
if you buy diamond jewelry at flea markets or auctions, it
is to your advantage to know how to roughly estimate weight.
Probably
the easiest way to estimate weight is to carry a diamond weight
estimator with you. It's an inexpensive piece of metal or
plastic that has cutouts or diagrams of diamond sires corresponding
to various diamond weights .
They
can be found in an jewelry supply stores. Remember that since
these estimators do not take into consideration the ;s. depth
of a diamond or its girdle thickness, they can only give a
general idea of the weight. Jewelry supply stores also sell
gauges that measure diamond depth, but they are more expensive
and more complicated to use.
Another
way of getting a general idea of the weight of the diamond
is to measure the diameter with a fine ruler and compare it
with diameters listed on weight estimation charts such as
the one on the following page. Remember, diameter measurements
can be misleading. The only accurate way of determining the
weight of a diamond is to take it out of its setting and weigh
This however, is not always possible nor advisable.
