| Choosing
A Diamond Ring

Factors
Affecting the Cost of Mountings
The higher
the gold or platinum content the greater the cost of the mounting.
Therefore the weight of a mounting is an important cost factor. The
value of the metal in the mounting increases as follows: 14
karat gold < 18 karat gold < platinum.
Sometimes,
white gold mountings cost slightly more than those of yellow
gold because they are often made to order. Also, since white
gold is alloyed with nickel, it is a harder metal to work,
which may add to the labor cost.
Mountings
engraved with the name of the designer or jeweler usually
cost more than those without such an engraving.Mountings that
require a lot of work to cast, shape, or polish cost more
than those that are quick and easy to finish
.Hand-fabricated
mountings cost more than cast and die-struck mountings.
Custom-made mountings cost more than mass-produced mountings.
If a jeweler has to make a mold and cast a ring individually,
you can expect to pay at least double what it would have cost
if it had been mass produced.
When
you evaluate the cost of ring mountings, keep all the above
factors in mind. Try to compare mountings of the same metal,
weight, and manufacturing process. Slight differences in mountings
do not normally affect the cost of a diamond ring very much.
In most cases, the major portion of the cost is in the diamonds.
Slight, unnoticeable differences in diamond quality can have
a large effect on the cost of a diamond ring.
