Poor Craftsmanship
The
mounting is poorly made if, with the naked eye, you can easily
see:
Large noticeable pits and bumps in the gold or platinum that
give the mounting a miniature Swiss cheese look. Besides looking
bad, lots of holes can mean the metal is not as strong as
it should be. Solder joints. Your ring should look like one
continuous piece of metal, not like pieces joined together.
Variations
in gold color. Occasionally, patterns are intentionally formed
by different colors of gold, but normally the color of the
gold should be the same throughout the ring.
Crooked
and unsymmetrical mounting parts. Is the metal head holding
the center stone tilted or off to the side of the ring? Does
the right side of the ring look the same as the left side
if they are supposed to look the same? Hopefully, your ring
will have a balanced and well-proportioned look.
The diamonds are poorly picked if :
You
can see obvious color differences in the diamonds with your
naked eye. Occasionally, the color of the center or major
diamonds are intentionally different from the other diamonds,
but normally all the diamonds are supposed to blend together.
The
diamonds are much too large or too small for their settings.
With your naked eye, you can see obvious differences in the
clarity and cutting quality of diamonds. For example, it's
pointless to pay a high price for high quality VS diamonds
and mix them with low quality IZ diamonds.
